Dust issues not settled

BY GRACE CABELL

Harewood residents fed up with dust blowing onto their properties may not have their issues resolved in a hurry. Residents say sites being used for demolition, salvaging and construction are causing dust pollution to travel directly onto their properties on the east side of Johns Rd in nor’west winds. Environment Canterbury’s

regional manager of monitoring and compliance Marty Mortiaux said an officer would visit Frews Salvage next week to check on their dust mitigation measures. But he said an abatement notice would only be looked at if ECan received further complaints. He said at the time of the last visit to the Frews site, all stockpiles were within the consented limits. “Frews can store up to 10,000m3 of mixed demolition waste on

site, 10,000m3 ofPhotographer: unprocessed Millie Clarke concrete, 5000m3 of processed concrete, 4000m3 of landscape materials, and 3000m3 of timber on site. “Their consent prohibits hazardous materials such as asbestos being stored or processed.” Frews did not respond to calls from the Nor’West News. Mr Mortiaux said ECan had received four complaints in relation to dust on Johns Rd, and an officer

Cilla Penny, Katie Gyde, Jacqui Lewis-McPhail, Christine Sharma

had followed up the complaint on November 22. But with no high winds on the day the officer could not substantiate the cause. Mr Mortiaux said on November 27 the same officer drove past the Frews site while attending to another dust complaint. The officer said he did observe dust coming off the site and the Downer’s motorway works behind it. • Turn to page 2

Speed limit causes safety worries for school, playcentre

McMaster Heap Veterinary practice

THE GIFT OF GIVING Recently my son Isaac and I had the opportunity to visit a kindergarten and share with young children our love of animals and what they mean to us. Lola was part of our entourage, as was my niece Olivia and 81 year old friend Jean. In true black Labrador style she was super friendly, attentive to these children’s needs letting them cuddle and touch her and hanging out for any food that came her way. We arrived with pet gift packs, lots of sports equipment for the kindy, Isaac’s beloved books to read to the children and leave with them and morning tea. We arrived excited to meet these children and share our knowledge on the value of a pet and we left inspired and motivated to keep in contact with these children.

Spending a morning with these kindy kids was hugely rewarding for all of us. We read books, played memory card games, painted and made things out of playdough, kicked soccer balls around and I spent a lot of time talking about my faithful companion Lola. The children were an absolute pleasure to be around, sharing stories of their pets and what were their favourite animals. They loved being read to and enjoyed playing soccer with Isaac.

ability for parents with pushchairs to use this crossing. Mrs Greenwood said it would be too small and create potential issues with visibility. “It’s great the bus stops have been moved – but there are still things to be looked at that could impact the school’s safety,” she said. The playcentre had also questioned why the 40km/h speed zone only operated for the school and not the play group. Fendalton-Waimari Community Board chairwoman Val Carter said the road was a big issue. “The playcentre gets out at 12 midday – it’s a 70km/h road,” she said. Concerns had been passed onto the NZTA to consider.

Dust issues not settled • From page 1 He said both companies were contacted about it. Mr Mortiaux said part of the problem was the large expanse of shingle along Johns Rd. “The Johns Rd widening works will likely move into these areas soon and hopefully alleviate this issue,” he said.

Many children never come into contact with pets and Isaac and I firmly believe that “ Life is better with a pet” and that they deserve our undivided care, attention and unconditional love. Sadly in my line of work as a vet, I do see occasionally animals that are neglected, sad and often in pain. Steve and I do everything we can to provide this pet with immediate care and try to then educate the owner on how to better care for their special pet. It’s not always easy and sometimes the outcome is not what we are after, but it doesn’t stop us trying. Deciding on the right breed of animal for your family is crucial to the success of that animal enhancing your family life. Isaac and I also have a very strong sense of community and helping others in need. We really enjoy giving hope, making people laugh and doing special things for them that they don’t expect. Isaac is right behind KidsCan, which provides breakfasts and lunches for hungry children in schools and through Samaritan’s purse, Isaac has placed 2 water wells in African communities. As Isaac has often said, if everyone just did a little the entire world would have a lot!

A school and playcentre are pushing for tighter road safety on Harewood Rd. Harewood Primary School principal Julie Greenwood had been worried the close location of new Metro network bus stops could cause safety issues for pupils and parents. Temporary bus stops for the new network had been relocated at the request of Harewood Playcentre and Harewood Primary. But after a meeting with the FendaltonWaimairi Community Board, the school and playcentre were still concerned about the busy 70km/h road. The New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) had proposed a pedestrian refuge near the school. The playcentre had concerns over the

But Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown said this was not the cause of the issue. “The guys at city care have the contract for the road repairs and they always water it so they’re not the concern,” he said. Mr Keown said he thought would be hard to measure the volume of materials at the sites.

New Avonside, Shirley schools’ sites revealed BY KYLE KNOWLES

The new sites for east Christchurch’s two biggest high schools have been narrowed down to two. Burwood Park and QE II Park have been identified as the two potential sites for Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School. In a statement released by Shirley Boys’ last week it said details are yet to be finalised but the sites have been looked at. “The ministry is yet to finalise how the schools would be located on either site, but is considering the northern section of Burwood Park and an eastern section of QE II Park.” Shirley Boys’ principal John Laurenson said he was happy with the two locations identified and was relishing the prospect of building the new school. “We’ve worked through a process to get here, which started many months ago with more than 26 possible sites. We worked through a checklist including transport options and access to the site, location of population, where future population growth is going to occur and geotech reports.” Mr Laurenson said the school’s recommendation was now in front of Minister of Education Hekia Parata and it would be up to her to

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Interest for facility

The city council is interested in hearing from residents and community groups who would use the Bishopdale Community Centre and Library. Future options for the rebuild of the centre are being investigated. An email address will be set up for people to register their interest. For more information visit www.futurechristchurch. co.nz.

Parking complaints

Fendalton Open-air School has received complaints that parents are parking outside the school gates on Waiwetu St. The city council would be sending enforcement officers and issuing tickets. The school had asked parents not to stop cars outside the gates.

make the final decision. The school said it is currently working with authorities and when a final decision is made next year a consultation process will take place. “It is expected that when a final site is chosen, the public will have an opportunity to express their views on any development through the normal resource consenting processes.” There was hope from groups in

east Christchurch a new aquatic facility would be placed on the QE II site. Mr Laurenson said a precedent has already been set around Christchurch with the Riccarton Library and the Graham Condon pool in terms of a mixed facility. He said he would welcome any community facilities to be used by both the public and the school. It is anticipated that work on the

school buildings will start in 2016 and be completed for the 2018 school year.

A bomb-scare at Redwood Kidsfirst Kindergarten has been labelled as a childish prank by police. A threatening note led to officers and a specialist search dog handler cordoning off the area. Staff and children were asked to evacuate the property.

Sculpture restored

A two-tonne, three-headed sculpture of a white crane or kotuku has been restored by Smith Cranes and Construction and returned to the Isaac Conservation Park, McLeans Island. The statue was rusting away and had fallen off its base but has now been restored after a month of repair works.

We were then posted back down to Burnham and I taught at Hornby Primary School. Then we got posted to Singapore for two and a half years at another British forces school. What did you do when you came back to New Zealand? I was anxious to teach again so I went to the education board. They asked if I’d like to teach at Ferndale School. I arrived on the first day and I had no idea it was a special school. I walked in and I had the senior boys, aged 16 to 19. There were all these down syndrome and autistic boys and I wondered just what I had struck – I

in spite of obstacles I’ve just moved back in the last six weeks. Do you have a family? What do they do? I do, but unfortunately two of my three children live overseas. One lives in England and one in Germany and I never see my grandchildren. But they are coming over for my retirement. It’s the first time in 20 years the whole family has been together, so I’m really looking forward to it. When did you know you wanted to be a teacher? From about the age of five, because I was bossy [Laughs]. I used to invite all the kids in the neighbourhood to come and play school but I was always the teacher. I’ve been passionate ever since then. You have to be if you’re teaching for 50 years. What positive changes have you seen in teaching? Huge ones. I think the biggest one would be that everything now is student-centred and they’re part of all the planning. It’s no longer teacher up front and kids down the back. They know themselves better now. Is there anything you have disliked about the changes? On the negative side there is a huge amount of paperwork and planning and assessments, often for no good reason. When do you have the fun times and special moments? We’re so busy ticking the boxes.

After that I thought it was time to get out and took a senior teaching job at Casebrook Intermediate and was there for 16 years. What has been the hardest part? I think it’s the time factor – just trying to fit in everything you want to fit in. You don’t get a life balance. I’ve neglected my husband a bit over the years. In education nothing ever feels complete, you’re never finished. There’s always something more you could do. Sounds like you’ve had a pretty interesting career then? I’ve been blessed with a rich, exciting teaching career. People say 50 years, that’s such a long time – and I think really? Where did it all go! What are you looking forward to the most when you retire? I have my house to get back to. And I love travelling – I’ve got a cruise planned around Japan in April and I want to get back to England. I have four grandchildren and I’ve never been to one of their birthday parties. What do you think you will miss the most? I will miss the children terribly. I’ll miss the staff rotary too, all the jokes and the laughs. Thank you for your time today.

Residents call for action on flood plan BY GRACE CABELL

The city council is holding off on the $48 million dollar solution recommended to fix Flockton Basin’s flooding woes. But some residents say urgent action is needed. At a city council meeting on Wednesday, December 10 several St Albans residents presented deputations pleading the city council to expand the alignment area further into St Albans. Warrington St resident Carla Martin said the decision could not be deferred any longer. “Flooding is a reality for us –it’s not a matter of if, it’s of when. Something needs to be done now,” she said. Edgeware Rd resident Ian Westbrook said it was necessary the city council investigate extending the proposal up to Geraldine St. “The inclusion of St Albans creek in planning needs a big step forward,” he said. He said the extension was essential and hoped it would help with the “mountain of sewage” that had risen since the earthquakes. “We need to add the enlargement of the culverts at Champion St. In our minds this is the worst one,” said Mr Westbrook. The city council would now consider looking at an alternative alignment before a final commitment to the multimillion dollar project was made.

NOR’WEST NEWS

▌READER’S ▌ LETTER The Nor’West News asked readers to have their say on where they thought the boundaries of St Albans lay. Julia Egan, of St Albans, responded with this letter: I believe that a good proportion of St Albans residents are deluded about where they actually live. Real estate agents have a lot to answer for and are the only industry that gets away with excessive false advertising. More often than not houses are advertised as being in Merivale, not St Albans. For example, we live just off the corner of Bristol St, which is off St Albans St. Our neighbours who live on St Albans St and Bristol St think they live in Merivale. How anyone who lives on or near St Albans St can think they live in Merivale, is laughable. The street name alone is a bit of a giveaway. The Merivale/St Albans boundary is up the middle of Papanui Rd. People don’t relate to St Albans because they don’t realise they live here. I am sure the same snob factor occurs on the St Albans/Shirley boundary. Good luck clarifying our suburb. Personally, we are very happy living here and enjoy the proximity to buses, schools, the city, shops, parks, Scouts, etc. Julia Egan • What do you think of the St Albans issue? email grace. cabell@christchurchstar.co.nz

PREPARATION: Year 6 pupils prepare a lunch to thank helpers involved in the Garden To Table project the school had been involved with over the past year, aimed at encouraging pupils to develop healthy eating choices.

Healthy eating at Northcote

This year Northcote Primary School has started the Garden To Table programme aimed at encouraging pupils to develop healthy eating choices. “Grow it, try it, and you might like it” is the motto being embraced by the school. The hands-on gardening and cooking programme ensured cooking and gardening skills were taught and taken back into the classroom to aid further learning. Pupils were encouraged to try new foods, textures and fla-

vours to provide them with the knowledge they needed to make informed eating choices. As a way of thanking the groups which have been a part of the Garden To Table programme, helpers were invited to a lunch on Friday, December 5 to thank them for their help during the year. Year 6 pupils made a table setting for 40. Many of the pupils arrived and began work before the school bell, with some continuing through their breaks to complete their

restaurant meal. The programme was supported by the Healthy Promoting Schools and Orchards in Schools models. Year 6 teacher Perry Rapson said throughout the year children became more ambitious as they made their own flat breads, soups and spring rolls. Mr Rapson said not only did the pupils learn about gardening and cooking skills but also about taking responsibility and co-operating together. Next year the aim was for the

whole school to be involved in the programme. The Canterbury Horticultural Society in conjunction with the Canterbury Charitable Trust funded the orchards project, purchasing trees, native plants, and berry bushes to establish the orchards. In two years the sites would come to fruition, becoming spaces covered with native plants, herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees for the children and community to benefit from.

Best electric vehicle from Papanui High BY GRACE CABELL Papanui High School has won the award for best home-built motor controller at the first EVolocity motorsport event. The event held on November 30 saw 15 Canterbury high school teams race electric vehicles designed and built by students. It was New Zealand’s first-ever day of electric motorsport, held at Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Ruapuna Speedway. The Papanui team included Josh Wilson, Michael Hann, Cameron Johnston, Joseph Dodd. The team had been attending design boot camps and working over weekends to get an edge on the competition. Papanui High teacher Dave Ruddle who was involved in managing the teams, said the challenge of designing and building the vehicles had been a huge incentive for students. Geraldine High School took out the prize for overall performance winner and the Lincoln High School team had the fastest school vehicle on the day, reaching 30km/h. Chief executive of principal

READY, GO: Breens Intermediate School pupils (in blue) push off with a speedy start at the ActivePost Tough Kid Christchurch event.

Pupils toughen up for muddy challenge CREATIVE: A team from Papanui High School won the award for best home-built motor controller at the first EVolocity motorsport event. Pictured: Student Joseph Dodd. sponsor Orion, Rob Jamieson, said it was great to see the ingenuity and technical expertise demonstrated by students and other participants. “We see the support of EVolocity as an investment in our future. We’re proud to be associated with an event that encourages students in their education and stimulates their interest in electrical engineering studies.”

The electric vehicle building project was part of the STEM studies (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programme in schools and was also supported by CPIT. “We recognise the need for a highly-trained and skilled workforce. Participation in this type of event grows and develops those specialised skills in our young people,” said Mr Jamieson.

Breens Intermediate School pupils dominated the start line at the ActivePost Tough Kid Christchurch. The Sport Canterbury obstacle course saw 29 Christchurch schools running through tyres, jumping hurdles and sliding through a mud pit at Riccarton Racecourse on Tuesday, December 9. Breens Intermediate entered 200 pupils into the challenge and was one of three schools returning for its second challenge this year. Parent Jackie Hill had her year 5 daughter participate in the challenge.

“The event was well organised, the kids all had heaps of fun. It was so good to see kids getting wet and muddy,” she said. The event was sponsored by ActivePost and supported by Kiwibank and the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust. Riccarton Racecourse has provided the venue for two years in a row. Both ActivePost and Sport Canterbury intended to repeat the course next year and extend it to 2000 participants for 2015.

Physical activity important for staying healthy

A

ccumulated aches and pains are part of our ageing process, and unfortunately there is no cure for them. The good news is they can be managed, says Richard Hopkins of Physiotherapy Associates in Wainoni Road, and without any disruption to our lifestyle. He and the clinic’s other physiotherapist Wendy Cooper have more than 50 years’ experience in the profession between them, both in New Zealand and overseas, as well as post-graduate qualifications in orthopaedic manual therapy. and experience enables them to provide the best possible advice and therapy for clients. The clinic’s motto is “finding solutions”, and as Richard explains, the aim is to help people retain and improve their body’s functionality without overdoing it. Clients are given hands-on physiotherapy treatment as well as a structured series of exercises tailored to their individual needs and the tools to carry on with them. Examples of structured exercises may be relaxing the shoulders and bending backwards for people who sit hunched at

their desk for long periods. Physical aids may also be provided, such as orthotics for the shoes or lumbar rolls for back support. It is also important to stay physically active, Richard points out. It has been well proven that physical activity is a major component in the treatment of ‘lifestyle’ diseases like osteoarthritis, diabetes, obesity and heart disease. He and Wendy suggest that New Year is an ideal time to make the commitment to get back into physical activity if it has been neglected, and setting personal goals to do so much activity a day will ensure it doesn’t fall by the wayside again. That activity or ‘exercise’ can be anything people enjoy doing, such as walking, jogging, gardening, swimming, biking or sport such

as tennis. Richard and Wendy also ‘practise what they preach’. “We are both still competitive and recreational athletes, so we know all about morning stiffness, joints wearing out, knee surgery, etc. from a personal perspective,” Richard says. Physiotherapy Associates also provide post-surgery treatment following hip and knee joint replacement. The clinic at 86a Wainoni Rd, opposite Porritt Park, will be closed on the statutory holidays, but the physiotherapists will be available on other days over the holiday season, so call to make an appointment. PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Greetings, Tena Koutou Katoa, The school year has now come to an end. We have had a very successful year, and we are making a difference for our students and they are doing very well. This has been reinforced by the reflections of the Education Review Office following their visit this year. I am very pleased to be able to say they found strong evidence to support that the school continues to move forward with its focus on high quality teaching and learning. The school takes a holistic view of achievement. Students are strongly encouraged to strive for personal excellence. Through innovation, flexibility and choice, students’ academic pathways are increasingly specialized as they progress through their schooling to appropriately support their learning needs and underpin their transition to further study or employment. Complementing the academic opportunities is the schools co-curricular programme, where students have performed exceptionally well in a full range of activities with some outstanding successes. Whether curricular, co-curricular or both, we are very proud of what our students’ achieve. Sadly, we will also be saying farewell to a very long serving staff member who is retiring; Mr Alan Smith, who for thirty-five years has been part of the science department as a technician. Alan has made a significant contribution to the wider school through his involvement with Audio Visual and IT, as the school photographer, (much of our history has been captured by his photography), and community education. We are incredibly grateful for all his hard work and commitment to the school and wish him the very best for his retirement. I would like to thank and acknowledge; • the parents, whanau, and the wider community for their support and for sharing in the responsibility of educating our young people • the entire staff, who make Papanui High School an exciting and rewarding place • the students, who give us all enormous pleasure in seeing them achieve the things they do. Our students grow up to be wonderfully mature young adults with a strong sense of social responsibility. Papanui High school is our school to be proud of. How it is viewed and what we achieve within it is our responsibility. ERO has stated we are doing very well; however, it is our individual and collective responsibility to ensure ongoing progress and success. For everyone; Papanui is a place of opportunity - opportunity to succeed, to develop and grow to be the best that one can be. I wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and holiday period. I look forward to 2015 in the knowledge that as a school and a community we will continue to work together to provide our students an education that is supportive, caring, and developed in a ‘forward thinking’ way. Jeff Smith Principal

A group of Cantabrians are getting into the festive spirit by adopting a family for Christmas as part of a charity project. The project involves buying a less fortunate family food, decorations and presents. Volunteers were given a suggested list of food and presents along with each family member’s age and interests as a guide. Project organiser Cilla Glasson said she had run the project alongside The Salvation Army prior to the February 2011 earthquake and it had been successful. She had received a number of requests to repeat it which prompted her to run it again. Mrs Glasson has done charity work with food aid group 0800 Hungry and got in touch with them to join the cause. Volunteers at 0800 Hungry provided a list of families who they thought would be best suited to receive the Christmas goods. The Salvation Army also

Meanwhile, Mrs Glasson emailed around to see who would be interested in the project, and had 50 volunteers sign up. “I was very impressed by that,” she said. The volunteers are buying the goods and will deliver them to their allocated family or to the Salvation Army depot about a week before Christmas. Mrs Glasson said it was

good to do something for other families who were less fortunate. “It’s nice to be able to give to other people.” She said a lot of the receiving families were from the eastern suburbs and they were all extremely grateful. Some suggestions for presents were Spider-Man toys, the movie Frozen on DVD, make up, toiletries and petrol vouchers.

Fight fire only within your ability BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

Kitchen fires have featured again this week with three attended and as nearly always someone ended up in hospital with flash burns. This happened last Saturday night in a house in Linwood. My broken record message yet again. We keep on seeing people either getting burnt or suffering from smoke inhalation when try-

ing to handle a fire that has got too large. The message remains the same, Stay with your stove top cooking throughout the process. Use a lid, oven tray or damp towel over a pot on fire but only if you’re confident enough in your ability to manage this safely, without burning yourself. If not, or if the fire gets too large, too soon, for goodness sake back out, shut the door, get everyone out of the house and call us.

Also arson features again with the scorched earth of Avonside further attacked in the early hours of last Friday, this time in Acland Ave. I’ve got a theory that many of these fires are set by the same people. This is based on the fact that the majority of offenders I’ve met and spoken to when conducting home fire safety training in our jails are not the least bit interested in lighting things.

Families living in the fast-growing area of Rolleston will no doubt be very pleased to see a new cycle shop open in their local shopping centre.

Full Carbon Road 105 From $1899 A branch of the long-established Cycleworkz in the Bishopdale Mall, Cycleworkz Rolleston offers an extensive selection of bikes for the whole family, says owner Joe Crichton.

KIdS RELIC 20 & 24 INCh BIKES

“We are a family-oriented business and we were very keen to open a shop in Rolleston because it gives us the chance to be part of a growing community,” Joe says. “We are starting in a small, temporary shop, then when the new complex is built we will be moving into a larger shop in there.”

As an independent operator, Joe is able to choose what brands to stock at Cycleworkz, and he offers a wide range to suit all requirements and budgets. They range from children’s bikes right through to adult sizes, as well as road bikes and mountain bikes. Brands available are BYK, BH, Trek, Jamis, Polygon and the New Zealand-designed Bauer.

Alloy Road From $879 “Bauer is a very popular brand at the lower end of the market and our range covers bikes for both adults and kids,” Joe says. “Trek and BH are premium brands, and we have them priced from $500. It’s a great value range for our customers, and at the higher end these brands are used by Tour de France competitors.”

In addition to the bikes, Cycleworkz Rolleston stocks a full range of cycling accessories. These include the German Uvex helmets and eyewear as well as other leading helmet brands, cycling shoes, gloves, tyres and saddles. They also carry a wide range of high-vis gear, which is becoming increasingly sought after as cyclists become more aware of their need to be seen by other road users, especially motorists.

Full cycle repairs are also offered at Cycleworkz.

“The workshop is a big part of our business,” Joe says. “Robbie Brown is our workshop manager and he is able to do all types of cycle repair. We also provide a bike fit for our customers, which means when they purchase a bike it is adjusted to their individual needs. “Their first service, which is usually after about six weeks, is free, and for the high-end models we offer a year’s free service.”

Full Carbon Road 105 CYCLEWORKZ From $1899 For the younger children, Cycleworkz Rolleston also sells scooters and provides scooter repairs.

A former fitness instructor and educator, Joe describes himself as a “bike nut”, and he regularly cycles with his family. He says recreational cycling has seen “tremendous growth” over the last five years, especially in Christchurch, and he enjoys being part of the industry and providing products and services so families can get involved in this enjoyable and healthy pastime. He plans to introduce group rides in Rolleston, with participants setting out from Cycleworkz for rides around the local area.

WHY DO SO MANY DISHES CALL FOR AN ONION COOKED IN BUTTER BEFORE THE MAIN COOKING? For flavour. Some recipes suggest cooking until tender but not brown, others go on until the

onions are golden or caramelised. Either way it’s worth it if you enjoy tasty food. You can cut the amount of fat used by covering the pot while your onion cooks — the lid collects moisture that would normally evaporate, and by returning this to the onion, it avoids burning. The Lezyne Blox-23 is a shop quality tool in a trail-sized package. Extra long bits and a high tool count make this an extremely versatile and portable tool. CNC machined aluminum side plates reduce weight. Extra long chrome vanadium bits are nickel plated for durability. The offset wrapped bit design allows for a compact tool profile. A steel chain breaker with integrated spoke wrenches works with 9/10 speed chains.

At ABUS, the name Steel-O-Flex stands for cable locks with high flexibility and double security. The steel cable is covered in overlapping shells made from toughened steel, like scale armour. As a result, its resistance to attempts to break it open is increased significantly, while its weight only increases slightly and its flexibility remains largely intact. This means that it is easy to attach any vehicle to a fixed object.

technology: • 15 mm overlapping steel shells protect the inner steel cable • PVC-coating to prevent damage of the bicycle’s paintwork • ABUS automatic cylinder drillprotection and user-friendly reversible key • Two keys are supplied with the lock

The Salvation Army supports those in need at Christmas

The Salvation Army has continued to be busy in Christchurch north, offering practical help through the food bank, advocacy and support for those facing tough times, facilitating people as they deal with financial difficulties, the trauma and challenge of sickness, house fires, caring for new babies and liaising with government departments.

W

e know life can be overwhelming when you are in the middle of tough situations. The Family Stores situated in Papanui and Cranford streets are places where you will find clothing, bric-a-brac, toys and furniture at an affordable price for the whole family. They are an integral part of

what happens in the community, supporting families in need through house fires, burglary and family breakups. Any clean and useable furniture and clothing can be picked up by ringing the Cranford Family Store and making a time. One of the team has been supporting staff in schools in the area, and of late helping pupils with cartooning. Some fun times have been a Family Movie Night, complete of course with popcorn! A Kids’ Day Out was held in the last holidays and they got to enjoy crafts, indoor and outdoor games, face painting, music and a BBQ lunch. The team will be seeing some changes next year but remain committed to seeing families strengthened, and fostering neighbourhoods where people feel safe and are connecting with each other. A Christmas Community Day is planned for Sunday, December 21, based at Northcote School from 10am to 2.30pm with lots of fun for the whole family. The Big Carol Sing and Christmas Story will begin at 1pm in the school hall. As we go into this busy time, we are so grateful for those who are teaming up with The Salvation Army to help make Christmas more special by donating food and gifts for the ones we have been engaging with over this past year. What you do makes a huge difference!

Gill Waugh with Emily Pomaroy at Kids’ Day Out.
